We are going to go out on a limb here and say that if asked, you will say you have experienced stress at some point in your life. I mean, after all, life is stressful and many of us will admit to feelings of stress and anxiety on a regular or semi-regular basis. In fact, according to the American Institute of Stress 73% of us experience psychological symptoms of stress regularly and 77% of us regularly experience physical symptoms of stress. THAT’S A LOT OF STRESS!

You May Be Stuck

If you find yourself feeling stressed and anxious a majority of the time, it could mean that your body is stuck in the Fight Or Flight Response. Your sympathetic nervous system is telling your body that you are in danger and your body BELIEVES it. You think you are in danger so your body is releasing a lot of the stress hormones and is bracing itself for impact. This can lead to a bunch of symptoms such as an increase in blood pressure, an increased heart rate, fatigue, headaches, migraines, and gut issues.

When you are stressed out all the time, your body never gets to head into the parasympathetic state which is Rest, Repair, Reproduction, and Digestion. Chronic stress puts a strain on your body because you never get to the Rest and Repair stage and as you can imagine, it has an effect on all of the vital systems of the body.

What Can You Do About It

Start with your daily routine. Try starting your day off on a positive note to set your intentions for the day. There are many different things you can do to get yourself in a positive frame of mind. The trick is to find something that will appeal to you and repeat it until it becomes a routine. Routines get results! Here are a few morning routine ideas for a positive start to your day:

  • Start a gratitude journal – start each day writing down 5 things you are thankful for
  • Do some daily affirmations while you are getting ready – put post-it notes on your mirror and as you are getting ready, say them to yourself
  • If the first thing you usually do each day is reach for your phone, use that as a springboard to a new healthy routine. There are tons of apps out there that you can download onto your phone to help you center yourself, breathe or start a meditation practice. Find one that you love and make it a part of your day!
